This week, it was time for the Flatcoat Christmas Party. To the uninitiated, this is an exclusive event hosted by dear friends for their flatcoat retrievers.
Since Flossie and I were fortunate enough to be included last year, life has changed profoundly for both of us. Now, Christmas feels like a season to be endured, as it will our first without my late partner Graham.
We will be spendng the day quietly on our own so I can take stock of the tumultuous year in the comfort of our still new and unfamiliar home. I don’t know if I will regret this decision but it feels like the right thing to do.
However, despite my bah humbug tendencies this year, I didn’t want Flossie to miss out on the fun and festivities so we once again enjoyed the warm welcome of our friends, both two and four-legged.
There’s nothing like four enthusiastic tails wagging perilously close to a beautifully decorated Christmas tree to take your mind off your troubles.
The dogs wore their festive bandanas, they ate tasty sausages and seasonal treats and exchanged gifts. Flossie received a personalised tin with the words, ‘Flossie’s treats, for (mostly) good behaviour’. She’s a very lucky girl.
The best part of the day was being amongst friends who accept that we aren’t feeling as jolly as usual. Much as I try to put on a brave face, Flossie is affected by my emotions. She’s a sensitive soul and it’s been a difficult time for both of us.
But just for a few hours, it didn’t matter. I could put to one side the constant heartache and anxiety about my future and simply appreciate being with people who understand as well as four effervescent and slightly crazy dogs.
I will be glad to see the back of 2019 but I am trying my best to look forward to a brighter new year.
